Sioloc Fjords is based on the theater play “The wild duck” by Henrik Ibsen. This play was the first theatrical performance directed by Karolos Koun when he founded the school “Art Theater Karolos Koun” in 1942, during the years of oppresion, in the yard of Zwodochou Pigis 9 in Exarcheia, Athens.

The installation/performance refers to the narrative device of the attic floor found in the play, by emphasizing on the animals that were kept there. In this way an environment is created where it can be seen as a shelter providing security, acting as a parallel universe - an escape from reality.

This project is the result of a workshop where the poem “Sea Bird” by Johan Sebastian Welhaven was analysed. The poem acted as inspiration for Ibsen’s play. During the phases of the workshop many methods of creative writing and theater games were used in order to achieve a relationship between the real and the fictional world. A group of performers was formed bringing together people from different cultural backgrounds. The inclusion in a social framework becomes the starting point so Sioloc Fjords can be seen as a made up world where reality is mixed with illusion, highlighting the conditions of “vital lying” a central element in the work of Ibsen, which comments on the ethics of social hypocrisy.

A watermelon that takes you home.
